ASCII CODE

ASCII (pronounced “askee”) is the most common alphanumeric code used to represent characters like A,B,C numbers and other symbols. The current standard alphanumeric code is the ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) code. This code allows manufacturers to standardize computer hardware such as keyboards, printers and video displays.

ASCII code uses either 7 or 8 bits for data representation. The 7 bits in ASCII code format can be represented as:                                                                                                              x6x5x4x3x2x1x0

where each x is either a 0 or 1. For instance, uppercase letter A can be coded as:                                                                                                                                                                              1000001

and lowercase letter can be coded as:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                1100001

Similarly there are ASCII codes for special characters. Some examples include:                                                                                                                                                                           010 0100   ($)                                                                                                                                                                                                             010 1011   (+)                                                                                                                                                                                                             011 1101   (=)

Hitting a key on the keyboard sends the corresponding ASCII code to the computer. For example, when you hit the space bar of your computer, 010 0000 is sent to the computer.                                                                                                                                                             With 7 bits, only 128 characters can be coded. Characters include letters, digits, special symbols, punctuation marks and control characters.
